LEADERSHIP AND ADMINISTRATIVE CORE (LAC)
LAC is the nerve center of the CHiLLi project, and is co-led by the CHiLLi and ACOA co-leaders Janko Nikolich, MD, Ph.D. (Bowman Professor and Head, Immunobiology) and Mindy Fain, MD (Hart Professor and Chief, Division of Geriatrics, General and Palliative Medicine). It is in charge of coorrdinating all CHiLLi activities and directing its scientific course.
To be placed on the CHiLLi email list, please contact info@aging.arizona.edu.
Biological Mediators Measurement Core (BMMC)
BMMC is in charge of measuring biological mediators of inflammation and pain in human and animal samples. It has an array of assays that can be used to this end and it provides services in the form of both consultation and experimental design as well as specific measurements of cytokines and chemokines (Multiplex/Luminex platforms) and pain mediators (custom detection platforms). The core is directed by Drs Rajesh Khanna (Professor, Pharmacology) and Jeffrey Frelinger (Professor, Immunobiology).
If you are affiliated with CHiLLi and/or are considering a project, you can obtain information about core services by contacting Dr. Aubin Moutal
Methods and Human Performance Core (MHPC)
MHPC is in charge of providing expertise on and critical services for research, including studies involving human subjects. The core is designed to assist investigators solve the many challenges associated with doing research with older adults by (a) promoting rigorous scientific studies, (b) providing advice to promising trainees and junior faculty at all levels of knowledge and experience, (c) collaborating in the design of new studies and the preparation of grant applications and manuscripts, (d) providing support and building connections between the UA OAIC and external projects (EPs), and (e) overseeing developmental projects (DPs). It interfaces closely with the Biological Mediators Measurement Core to advance innovative research. It is directed by C. Kent Kwoh, MD (Professor of Medicine and Director, UA Arthritis Center) and co-directed by Bonnie LaFleur, Ph.D. (Associate Professor, Biostatistics) and Linda Phillips, RN, Ph.D. (Professor, Nursing).
If you are affiliated with CHiLLi and/or are considering a project, you can obtain information about this core services by contacting Dr. LaFleur for biostatistics, or Dr. Phillips for methods and geriatric expertise.
Research Education Core (REC)
CHiLLi REC is designed to offer creative, innovative and comprehensive educational programming to foster the development of the next generation of aging-oriented researchers capable of performing cutting edge research on responses to late-life injury. We are using a structured, competency-based, and geroscience-inspired approach involving individualized training plans to provide research training and tailored mentoring to promote research career development of junior faculty (the Aging Research Scholar Program) and to stimulate commitment to a research career in our focus area of late-life injury among postdocs and junior faculty from disadvantaged backgrounds and groups that are underrepresented in biomedical research (the Aging Research Incubator Program).
REC is co- led by Zhao Chen, Ph.D. (Professor and Chair, College of Public Health) and Sairam Parthasarathy, MD (Professor of Medicine, Chief, Division of Respiratory Medicine).
For information on the next cycle of REC applications and awards, please contact Ms. Lori Wieland after April 1, 2020.
PILOT AND EXPLORATORY PROJECTS CORE (PESC)
CHiLLi PESC is in charge of selecting and mentoring promising young investigators in the interest area of CHiLLi. Exceptionally, PESC may also select and mentor more established investigators that are for the first time applying their expertise to problems relevant to the recovery of older adults from late-life injury. PESC projects are solicited once a year by an institution-wide request for application (RFA) announcement, and are awarded following a competitive review process to a level currently available from within the CHiLLi funds.
PESC is led by Bellal Joseph, MD (Professor, Surgery) and Felicia Goodrum, Ph.D. (Professor, Immunobiology).
For information on the next cycle of PESC applications and awards, please contact Ms. Lori Wieland after April 1, 2020.
